Israel Just Says NO to a Just Peace - Part 3 - The GOI is SO Predictable

Today is Day 14,327 of the Maintenance of the Immoral (and Illegal) West Bank Settlements and more than 40 years since the start of the immoral (and illegal) occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.

The actions that the Government of Israel (GOI) takes to block efforts aimed at effecting a just peace are getting to be SO predictable.

Yesterday, the major news item was the release of Alan Johnson, the BBC journalist held hostage in Gaza for 114 days. From the July 4, 2007, Boston Globe "Khaled Meshall, the exiled leader of Hamas, said Johnson's release showed his Islamist movement was bringing order to the coastal enclave .... Hamas fighters had surrounded the area of Gaza City that is the base of the powerful Doghmush clan .... Meshaal told Reuters by phone: 'The efforts by Hamas have produced the freedom of Alan Johnson.' " In an accompanying picture in the Boston Globe Alan Johnson is seen with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza City.

That should have been seen as an opening for the GOI to enter into discussions with Hamas.

I, on the other hand, showed the article to my wife and said, "You know what that means, don't you."

"What?" she said.

"The government of Israel will now go into Gaza and kill some Hamas militants."

She gave me that look - the one that says "You are just so negative, always making cynical comments about the government of Israel."

So imagine my reaction when I saw this morning's article.

"8 Hamas militants killed in Gaza clashes By Ibrahim Barzak, Associated Press Writer July 5, 2007 GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip --Israel clashed with Hamas militants inside the Gaza Strip on Thursday, killing eight in a fierce gunbattle that drew in Israeli aircraft, tanks and bulldozers.
The army said airmen on a routine patrol about half a mile inside the Gaza Strip saw militants approaching the soldiers and opened fire with machine guns. The militants then fired at the patrol, leading to a shootout on the ground, the army said. Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida said its fighters started the clash by opening fire at an Israeli undercover unit. Witnesses reported heavy fire as Israeli tanks and bulldozers moved in, and soldiers took positions on rooftops. Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants, meanwhile, laid mines against the soldiers. Hamas officials said some 15 tanks and three bulldozers had moved into Palestinian farms, near the town of Jebaliya, and were leveling the land. The army would not comment."

And in a related story, Alan Johnson was quoted as saying about his release: "Suddenly they were worried that Hamas had them in their sights. I'm pretty sure that if Hamas hadn't come in and turned the heat on in a big way, I'd still be in that room." The story continued, "For Hamas, which has vowed to bring order to the violence-plagued strip, Johnston's release marked an opportunity to win credibility in the face of international efforts to isolate the movement in Gaza." And this response from a Fatah Abbas ally, Yasser Abed Rabbo, who "accused Hamas of staging Johnston's release in coordination with the captors as part of a bid to gain international legitimacy."

And the predictable attack by the GOI had the same purpose - to try to blunt any possible positive reaction and potential support for Hamas by other governments and organizations. Such a response could lead to intense presure on the GOI to agree to something unacceptable - a viable, contiguous, independent Palestinian state.

My son said I made a tactical error - I should have written my prediction here yesterday morning BEFORE the Israeli attacks inside Gaza (from which the GOI withdrew, didn't it?).

OK, then, here's what I predict will happen in the future - Shortly rockets will be launched from Gaza by someone belonging to some group and they will land in or near Sderot. The Government of Israel will immediately attribute this action to Hamas and will attack inside Gaza with missiles, helicopters, tanks, IDF ground forces and bulldozers and will kill at least four "suspected" Hamas militants. There will then be an article in which the reporter will refer to the action by the GOI as "retaliation" and, describe Hamas as the organization which "refuses to recognizeIsrael" and "refuses to renounce violence against Israel."

This situation cannot be considered, as so many say, hopeless. There is too much at stake.

Yesterday I posted a copy of the e-mail that I sent to Countdown asking Keith Olbermann to consider suggesting to the public that they "shun" George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Perhaps we should add to Mr. Olmert to the appropriate-to-be-shunned list.

A Call for the Resignation (and Shunning) of Bush and Cheney

On Monday night on his show, Countdown, Keith Olbermann announced that on his Tuesday show he would present one of his infrequent powerful comments the subject of which would be a request that George W. Bush and Richard Bruce Cheney resign their positions as President and Vice-President of the United States.

On Tuesday morning I sent the follwoing message to the show's e-mail address.

"Last night while watching our favorite newscast, Countdown, my wife and I were discussing, as usual, why, taking into consideration their lack of popular support and their lack of respect for the rule of law, George W. Bush is still the President of the United States and Dick Cheney is still the Vice-President of the United States.

"While I am a supporter of impeachment, I have predicted for the last year that there will be no need for this action because George W. Bush and Dick Cheney would, because of public pressure, recognize that they had shamed and soiled their offices and resign.

"Like so many of my predictions, this one has yet to come true.

"Frustrated while listening to the reports of the most recent outrage, the commutation of Scooter Libby’s sentence, I turned to Joan and told her my dream of a symbolic action – what if the President gave a press conference and no one showed up.

"You then announced, and shortly thereafter did, a segment on the story about US magazine being 100% Paris Free. I thought that you might segue from that to a 100% Bush Free comment.

"My dream and your story made me think of another question I have often had – why is it that individuals can act in outrageous ways and still be treated as respected members of the community. What has become of the traditional response of shunning?

"I took a quick look at Wikipedia for a definition. “Shunning” is “the act of deliberately avoiding association with, and habitually keeping away from, an individual or a group”. One of the goals of shunning is to remove or limit the influence of a member over other members in a community and “to isolate, to discredit or otherwise disempower such a member, often in the context of actions or positions advocated by that member.”

"That works for me!!!

"I await and look forward to your comment tonight with your request to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney that they resign, but, in order to increase the likelihood that this happens, you may want to suggest that the public shun these two - non-profit and corporate organizations not attend receptions at the White House, members of the media not gather at unofficial White House gatherings, government officials not make promotional outreach to either of them, educational institutions not ask either of them to speak - so that these two understand in a very direct way that we, the people, no longer want them in office."

As I expected, my suggestion was not incorporated into his talk. It was, however, quite impassioned and, as our one ally in the coalition of the willing would not say, "spot on". See for yourself.

But do remember to keep in mind the value of shunning and pass it on.

Is The Declaration of Independence Applicable to Those in the Occupied Territories?

Every July 4th, the Boston Globe reprints the Declaration of Independence and every year I read it. What an extraordinary document! How much we in the United States treasure this listing of what our rights are and how we will fight against those who try to take them from us.

I think that it would be a valuable exercise to pretend for a moment to be a Palestinian and read the slightly revised Declaration of Independence below. Would you sign it?

Now pretend that you are the head of a Country. If you received this document, would you recognize the government of this new place called Palestine?

At the same time pretend that you were in the colonies in 1776. Would you, like Samuel Adams, sign the original Declaration of Independence or might you have moved to London (and then waited 200 years to drink Samuel Adams beer)?

The Unanimous Declaration of Independence of the United Occupied Territories of Palestine

WHEN IN the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Such has been the patient sufferance of these occupied territories; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present Government of Israel (GOI) is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these occupied territories. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

GOI has refused its Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

GOI has not passed Laws of immediate and pressing importance.

GOI has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Knesset, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

GOI has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with its measures.

GOI has helped to dissolve the Palestinian Authority for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the People.

GOI has refused to cause another to be elected; whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the occupied territories remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

GOI has endeavoured to prevent the population by Palestinians of these United Occupied Territories of Palestine, for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners, refusing to pass others to encourage their migration hither, while encouraging Jewish Israelis to settle in the occupied territories and illegally appropriating private lands for their benefit.

GOI has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our People, and eat out their substance.

GOI has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislature.

GOI has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

GOI has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving its Assent to their acts of pretended Legislation:

For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these occupied territories:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond the occupied territories to be tried for pretended offences:

For abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For helping to suspend our own Legislature, and declaring themselves invested with Power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

GOI has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

GOI has plundered our seas, ravaged our coast, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

GOI at this time includes in its armed forces foreign Mercenaries – individuals from Russia and the United States who have been allowed to become citizens of Israel - to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy of a civilized nation.

GOI has excited domestic insurrections amongst us.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms:

Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A government, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Israeli brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace, Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the United Occupied Territories of Palestine, in General Session Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these occupied territories, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Occupied Territories of Palestine are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent Palestine; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the GOI, and that all political connection between them and the GOI, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as a free and independent State, it has full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
